Workshop

Christine Haenen

STRICTLY CHARCOAL &
MORE THAN COLORFUL

10:30am - 12:30pm   Sun Oct 5, 2014

$40

The Strictly Charcoal class is pairing up with More Than Colorful! Using the same great oversized, imaginative still life as inspiration, Christine will teach you how to find vibrant colors in black and white, within shadows and unusual colors in regular objects that surround us.

Strictly Charcoal teaches ancient European shading techniques for charcoal, a fragile yet bold drawing medium consisting of burned vine. Charcoal has been used by European Masters for ages and it has the unique properties to transform your emotions onto paper.

The purpose of More than Colorful is to create a natural transition from Strictly Charcoal into the world of color. Using colored markers, colored pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, gouache paints, water color paints, and ultimately, acrylics and oils, this class is a great and safe environment to explore how you interpret your world of color while learning various techniques along the way.

If you want to work with charcoal or graphite only, you are more than welcome.  This workshop is good for the beginner, those returning to their art activities, those who would like to experiment with different mediums and/or learn Master Techniques.

Materials to bring:

  • 18x24 sketch pad, newsprint and/or medium grade sketch paper. Minimum paper size for this course: 18x24.

  • If you are working in color: any of the above listed artist’s color materials.

  • If you are using charcoal either alone or with color: box of vine & willow charcoal, ¼” diameter or thicker (this class does not use compressed charcoal), a kneaded rubber eraser, a chamois, paper stumps and/or tortillons and a sketchpad.

Variety and experimentation is encouraged.
